Dudu Tucci - coming full circle after a decade
I remember a big fuss that was made in the international music scene when Dudu Tucci's first album Obatimale was released over a decade ago. I listened to it a few times, and all I heard was drumming. Well, cool, you'd think, for a drummer. But all I heard was the same thing, over and over and over again.
As a percussionist, I'm interested in breaks and changes in rhythm, not flat consistency. And all I could hear was consistency. (One reason I can't handle a lot of techno or trance...). Oh, and some vaguely cheesy melody
But I take it as a sign of my listening maturity that I've come full circle on Dudu Tucci. I can now hear the variations that are being played within the under tones. And to be fair, some tunes are far more interesting and varied than "Aruandé", the song that was being played as the "single" off the album (at least, at the college radio station where I DJ'ed).
So I present, as my first foray into Amazon links, a sample from Dudu Tucci's Obatimalé album.
Still not so much a fan of the "landscape" / environment songs he writes with melodies on synths and flutes, etc. Just give me the drums, man, just the drums.
