Rene Lacaille - Patanpo: Music from Reunion

Ahhh, this is awesome.

I remember hearing my first French accordion-meet-congas song (Afro-Musette by Marcel Azzola & Richard Galliano off the The Rough Guide to Paris Cafe Music album) and finding it... well, interesting....   While it proved to me that the combo could work, the actual song seemed a little ... intellectual about the approach.

Not so with Rene Lacaille.  This music is swung from the hip - danceable stuff in the way that Brazilian forro or Haitian meringue moves you. A musician from the island of Reunion, in the Indian ocean, Rene Lacaille has put together a simple but funky blend of accordion and percussion.   This is a great example of the amazing things that are happening (well, have been happening for a while now) in the "creole" music scene in France.

It's been 10 years since this album has been out. Time to catch up.

Galliano and Azzola are remarkable musicians. I just came across this recording of French Saxaphones with Azzola. http://dallasvietty.com/2009/09/15/french-and-american-saxophone-quartets/ I love your blog!
