Gilles Peterson - Worldwide
Just re-discovered Gilles Peterson's radio show (podcast link here), via a Saturday afternoon rebroadcast on Radio Nova . Originator of Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Something club nights in the late 80s, and subsequently Talkin' Loud Records, as well as having a hand in Acid Jazz Records, Gilles has always been a hero of mine.
As a college radio DJ (KTUH Manoa waddup!), I wanted to travel the same musical itinerary as Gilles Peterson because I was attacted to the same things in music as he is - a groove, a beat, regardless of country of origin. However, because of school broadcasting censorship limitations I was not allowed to play rap (too much threat of accidental foul language), and was thus shunted into the "world music" time slot. I strained against that limitation but always felt an obligation to occasionally play non-funky international tunes (Chinese flutes; Irish folk; and even Tuvan throat singing - although this last was pretty cool) but my "catalog" primarily featured music hevy on the rhythm. (I eventually got a "free form" late night show that sounded... remarkably like Gilles Peterson's show. Sincerest form of flattery....)
It's good to find a radio show that covers solid African music, hip-hop, electronic / house and jazz tunes - that doesn't aim to be eclectic or avant-garde, but just funky.
