Sita Sings the Blues
Sita Sings the Blues is, quite simply, stunning. As an integral narrative, it has some small challenges. For example, the movie counts 5 radically different types of animation, and it takes a bit to get over the mental resetting you have to do to switch from one style to the next.
But as an experience, it is unparalleled. Amanda and I watched this film recently, and afterwards we were left pretty speechless. Not so much in awe but in joy - it's such a fantastic piece of work with so many rewards to the viewer, and we found oursleves going over the film and our favorite parts for a long time after it ended.
This movie goes to the heart of the kind of thing Balé Techlorico is about - seemless mixing of cultural elements to create a new (folk) art - in this case, a new way of storytelling. She has also spent a lot of time thinking about what it means to make a movie incorporating cultural elements that are not (necessarily) her own. (See her FAQ, especially the section "Art").
You can download the movie, watch it, and share it for free - you can even set up your own screenings (and choose how much of the ticket receipts you want to share with the creator.). And before you think you might make yourself a mint and Nina Paley can handle her own screenings, you might want to know that one reason it's being distributed like this is because she got screwed on the licensing rights to 70 year old jazz tunes.
