I first picked up Mondomix at my rehearsal studio - it's a free (bi)monthly mag that covers the world of ... (cringe) "world" music.  It's definitely edgier than the Putumayo offerings, I'll say that much....  While I get the French paper version, their online offering is also in English (and Spanish and Italian) - and quite extensive.  I haven't finished exploring it yet:  news, artist interviews, free downloads, podcast and... whoa -  a whole MP3 store, DRM free.  Check out the percussion albums.

Springboarding from Mondomix, I also discovered fRoots.  The site itself does not have much content (its mostly a mag), but here you will find a working link to the fRoots podcast.
