Tego Calderon - 6/8 hip-hop

A loooong time ago when I was workng on a show with Daveed Diggs, he mentioned he wanted to create a hip hop song in 6/8  (yes, I know, it's 12/8 for the purists).  I remember he stressed that he wanted to make it sound like a 4/4 song to keep that hip-hop head-nodding effect.

I dont' know if he ever did it - given his talent, I'm sure he succeeded.  There have been several attempts over the years to create hip-hop tunes outside of the 4/4 meter - and most of what I've heard of the 6/8 attempts sound like concept tunes, not head-nodding "jams".  Then I heard Tego Calderon.  And I'll admit that even though I've been on the reggaeton bandwagon for a while, I slept on Mr Fire Ant for a long time before I came around.

So this has got to be one of my favorite hip-hop tunes right now - even though it's 2 years old.  You don't even know it's 6/8 until the break.  One reason I think it's works so well is that Tego raps in his usual laid-back style during the main section - and you can hear how he changes up his flow when he actually raps over the full 6/8 part towards the end, as if he is drawn to "play along" with the rhythm.

If you are lucky enough to live in a country that supports Spotify, here's a link to the song.

Heh heh... Obviously I'm really keen to hear 6/8 everywhere. I was convinced that the fast beat was 6/8 - but now I'm not... So much for studying rhythm, huh......

bro that song is in 4/4
